For a method that is less toxic than the usual - pour in half cup of baking soda followed by half cup of vinegar or lemon juice and scrub with a toilet brush.

Ok, this will sound strange, but coca cola is probably the best toilet cleaner money can buy. Just pour some in (making sure to coat the bowl) and leave it overnight. Next morning get your toilet brush out and give the bowl a scrub. If it's really bad you might need to repeat the process a couple of times.

If this works for you, you'll never drink Coke again! :)

If regular toilet bowl cleaner doesn't work it is probably mineral deposits from your water. Try CLR.

I personally think your best bet is to use limescale remover. I use harpic's toilet duck limescale remover - see source below for product description.

Leave it overnight, and then a quick scrub in the morning and... job done!... You might need a couple of applications depending on how long the limescale has been there, but this is your solution!

i put on disposable gloves, get a 'pumice stone', and rub the stains off. sounds strange? like maybe it would wreck the bowl? not really. it's the same stone used on your feet when you go for a pedicure and if you can rub it on your SKIN without breaking it, its safe for the bowl. brush off the grit and flush after. try it
