Mostly, the students in my 8th grade class is either 12 or 13 years old. But I don't understand; I even skipped one grade, but I am 14 years old. I came here in the US from the Philippines-I attended school there until 3rd grade...They would be suprised to know my age because I'm not really tall unlike my peers.

My question is, what's the "ideal age" for the grades in school (elementary, middle school, etc.)?

In america, fourteen is a little old for eighth grade...
how old were you when you started school?
Here you start Kindergarten at around age 5, then you go to first grate at age 6, second grade at age 7, third grade at age 8, so on. (these ages are approximate)
so by the time you are in eight grade people are mostly 13, but some are 14 (12 is pretty young for an eighth grader).
so really, there is nothing wrong with being 14 in eight grade... look on the bright side, you will be able to drive sooner than all of your friends!

In the U.S., grades (K-12) are associated strictly with an age. You can not start K unless you are 5; you can not start 1 (grade 1) unless you are 6 (depends upon the State; in Nebraska, you must be 6 by September; schools start in August.
So, K = 5; 1 = 6; 2 = 7; 3 = 8; 4 = 9; 5 = 10; 6 = 11; 7 = 12; 8 = 13; 9 = 14; 10 = 15; 11 = 16; 12 = 17. (First number is the grade level; second number is the age of the pupil AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
Most States do NOT allow for grade-skipping; they like to discourage any one who is "above-average".
Of course, in the Philippines it is K-10 to graduate. They graduate at age 16; which is what my oldest son did (K-12), but I home schooled him. [My wife is a Filipina.]
Usually when one transfers to the U.S. schools from the Philippines the student is put BACK 1 or even 2 grades because they persist in thinking that the schools in the Philippines are not as good. (Some of us know better; my sister-in-law teaches 3rd grade there.)
Good luck!
