I am travelling via the hume highway and I have my 9 month old son coming with me so that is why I need to stop on the way or else I would go the whole 4 hours.

Albury is a very nice place

If you have a bit more time; why not go through Healesville and Mansfield (both nice town for a break). Very nice coffee shop on the south side of the Mansfield main street, near the service station. Then up to the Hume at benalla.

If you don't mind winding roads, take the Mansfield -Whitfield road over the mountain pass, then on to Beechworth (a beautiful little town).

If you had more time, instead of going through Albury, go through Tallangatta and Coryong along the Murray. and then over the mountains through Tumbarumba to Wagga. Alternatively, if that drive is a bit much, simply head up the Olympic Highway from Albury. (It might be a bit much for your 9 year old).

I did much of the route on a motorbike a few weeks ago in reverse, heading for Phillip Island. Absolutely beautiful country.

At a guess (not knowing which part of Melbourne you are coming from), the Healesville - Benalla route should only add about an hour (plus stops); but the complete route through Tumbarumba would take a whole day.

Albury. It's on the river, you can sit in the shade, have a picnic and watch the water flow past. You can relax, feed your son, change the nappy, enjoy some peace and quiet and, when refreshed, drive up to Wagga.

Holbrook is nice too. It has a great big submarine (no kidding) in a park for you to explore.
