it's just a nickname. the way you chose to spell it is up to you. if you want to change your legal name (the one on your social security card, license, or passport) that's a different story. if you want to do that, then yes you need to fill out a ton of paperwork from a courthouse, sign papers in front of a notary, and get all legal documentation changed.

a little advice: if you ever consider changing your legal first name, since you're a girl, wait until the day you get married, if you're changing your last name anyway (that is, if you want to take your husband's last name), it makes it slightly less annoying to change both at the same time.

If you never used the name on anything official such as your social security card, birth certificate, or tax forms, you should be able to call yourself by any name you choose! And however you wish to spell it! as long as you continue using your legal name on all official documents.

A nickname has no legal significance at all. You can ask your friends to call you Wilma, if you want to.

Aly, i work for a government office, and I have the ability to change people's names, but only if they can prove that they conduct their eveyday business in that particular name, you will still need to prove that with documents. If you need to change your last name, you need a judge decision.
