PC Magazine does an annual survey of its readers

to determine which brands are the most reliable. For consumer notebooks, toshiba and dell are nearly identical in their rankings, followed by Compaq, then Acer.
In PC notebooks, the only brands to exceed them in reliability are Lenovo (formerly IBM's PC division) and Fujitsu, so you may want to consider those brands when making your choice.

Not really much of a difference between the major brands. I've owned an Acer before, and it OK, not great though. I commend Dell for keeping it's tech support in Canada, and not outsourcing it to India, so if you have any troubles, you will hopefully end up talking with someone fluent in English, and with no accent. Also, I've bought other dell products which I've been very happy with. I don't have too much experience with either Toshiba or Compaq.
So, my final recommendation is Dell.

If those are the only brands that you are going to choose from them I would personally choose a Toshiba. Especially if you are not paying for it. I believe you get what you pay for and Dell makes the cheapest computer on the market. But really it is personal preference and you should be looking more for hardware and not name brand. Do you want a dvd burner? Do you want wireless? Do you want a large hard drive for music or video. Good luck.

You need to know what you want.
if customization is a big factor, then dell allows many configurations of their laptops. according to the American Customer satisfaction index, HP is the best brand of computer, besides Apple of course. Out of your choices, dell is definitely the best, although i don't buy dells after my old laptop mysteriously ceased to charge just 2 days after my 2 year warranty expired.
To make a long story short, I tried a new battery and new charger-no luck. so now I have an HP and i love it.
By the way, there is a customer satisfaction survey on PCMag.com, but i don't like it because it groups HP and Compaq together, even though HP tends to be better.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any of them. My choice would be a white box, but they are generally more expensive.
On price and the proffered after sales service - which is more proffered than real - I'd go for Dell. Do appreciate that will all these machine you are locked into their hardware and upgrade paths which may restrict you later.
I think you should take care to buy whichever you choose from a reputable retailer.

I like acer, but it all depends on what you want it for. if your going for gaming look for over 2gb of ram with a 120gb plus hard drive, plus a nice graphics card with a 15" plus screen to get to visual. but if its something less simple than gaming any brand would do fine. what you want to look for after finding out what you want to do is find out who has the best warrenty and support. acer has a 1 year standard warrenty and also you have the choice of buying 2 different types of extened warrenties of your choosing. I would go with an acer 9401Z :)

All will work, but you have to know what you are looking for in each computer. If you are a gamer, you will want good graphics and speed. you will also want a lot of ram for speed. a good amount of ram is around 2 gigs which you will need for windows vista anyway.

It pretty much depends what the computer has installed them compared with the others, but my choice would be the Toshiba.
