Use the low -tech solution cheap solution that is guaranteed to work ; A $ 6.00 Rand McNally Road Atlas
Never use mapuest because to say that they totally suk would be kind.Their directions are really bad and their times are completely unrealistic and in many cases impossible to achieve
Case in point :
JFK -LAX 2833mi 42 hours Flat out impossible to do 2833/42 =67mph average speed NO !
Fastest and best
I-80 W >I-76W>I-70 W >I-15 W >I-10 W to Santa Monica Pier
Quite honestly If you're not going to crossing the Rockies in daylight just stay on I-80 to to I-15 and make a left
Once you get to Grand Junction CO If you want to get off the interstate and check out the world you will have a whole lot of 2 lane highway options that will take you to places lke ArchesNP, Capital Reef NP ,Bryce Zion NP ,North Rim GCNP or CanyonlandsNP, the Navajo & Hopi Reservations & GCNP
Allow four days for NY -LA and many would consider that to be a fast trip

I would HIGHLY suggest that you get a satellite navigation system like; Tom Tom! They are about 200 dollars. This was amazing for me! i used it going from Colorado to Moab, Utah to San Diego up from San Diego past San Francisco... then from San Diego through Arizona to Taos New Mexico to Colorado. Also from Virginia to Iowa and back to Colorado. I use this thing around town it come in handy... alot! They are also useful when you are some place you dont know how to get around and dont know what there is to see there. I have found amusement parks and all sort of tourist attractions. Plus it will tell you all the restaurants in the area you are in and the destination you are going to. Along with gas stations or just about anything you need to find (camping spots, national forest).

If you cant afford that you can always mapquest it! or you can buy a couple of maps one of the usa and then a couple of the state you are going to just so you know your way around!

Hope this helps! take care! Hope you enjoy your road trip! its a long long one!
