Very few times have I been able to tell the difference in a $12 cut vs more expensive. My daughter has a friend who comes to my house and cuts mine. I give her $20. My husband gets a haircut monthly and he goes to the shop where a friends wife works. He also pays $20. The cuts are $12 and since he knows Margret he tips her well.
Am I just cheap or do you think it is a case of you get what you pay for...

I definitely think you get what you paid for. My mom works in a professional salon, and she gets many customers that chose the cheaper salons, and their hair shows it bad! I'm not saying you need to be paying $70 for a haircut, but a good haircut is definitely worth spending a little more. My mom has some very loyal customers that tip her extremely well ... $10 - $20 extra. You need to understand that a lot of hairstylist are renting their own booths out, and those cost several hundred dollars a month ... they don't want all of their money going to the booth rental. My mom works on commission right now, and gets 60% of her total sales .. which means that 40% goes to the salon owners. Hairstylist also charge a base price for each thing they do, so they could give one person a haircut, color, wash, and blowdry and spend 2 hours on them, whearas they could do the same thing for another customer and it take 4-5 hours, and they are still getting paid the same amount for each customer even though they spent much more time with the second one.

I think it's the luck of the draw, actually. I have paid the going
rate and had chop jobs. And I had one once by a girl who
worked at a shop owned by a young woman that I went to school with, and I almost left in tears. So then the owner tried
to make it right, and she did an equally lousy job. It just was
not my day to get a hair cut.
I have gotten the best haircuts from beauty colleges for
some reason. I never left with one complaint. But I have when
I've gone to many of the so called, 'chain salons'. And often
used a coupon they'ed put into the paper. I always got stung!
I figured out, that the coupons were for using the new girl and
even tho they were fresh out of school they should have done
a fairer job than they did. I recognized that was the case,
when I went to a shop with a coupon, and the girl who took me
had been at the college just the month before, when I was. So
I went back to the college and asked for a senior and stuck
with the same girl til she graduated.
Often when I did find a girl who could not only cut well, but
could style as well to,she would be gone when I would try to make an appt at a regular shop. And they would never tell me where that girl had gone. There must be an overload of competition, that they never give out that info.
So now either I cut my own, or I go to a family shop where
the woman charges only $5.00 a head. But she's a talker,
and yesterday when I went in for a cut, she was talking with
my husband, and she forgot I'd wanted my hairline shagged
with a razor. And I wasn't paying attention, and I discovered
I had a square hairline in back. Ugh. It's too masculine for
me, but I have to let it grow out a bit now. So it will be ugly over the holidays. So I see now, I need to have her pay full
attention to what she's doing, as she will cut out of habit
without a reminder for something asked that's different.
Maybe that's why I've never found a beautician to be much
of a talker. If they need to concentrate and do a good job,
they aren't going to pay much attention to carrying on a
conversation. That's just common sense.

I pay about $13 for a haircut not counting tip. I have had some bad ones that cost a lot more. I usually go to Hair Cuttery and get it trimmed, about half an inch 2 or 3 times a year. That's it.
My hair is fairly long and doesn't need it. No, you're not cheap. An expensive salon costs only costs more. It doesn't
mean the haircut is any better than a cheaper one.

I get my hair cut about 2 times a year at Supercuts, when I don't cut it myself. It's $14-16 with tip. I've been cutting my husband's hair myself and it looks nice. This works fine for us.
I've gone to more expensive places in the past and didn't feel there was a big difference. I think if you are pleased with the service you're getting and like the cut, then the rate you are paying now is reasonable and you're not being cheap.

I trim our 17y/o daughter's hair every 6-8 weeks, Tc's every 2-3 mths with the electric trimmer and I cut my own hair whenever it gets to a length that annoys me. Whenever any of us have been to the hairdressers I've always had to do something when we get home due to some strands not being cut straight or having been left longer than should be. Tc has his cut on a number 2 or 3 and prefers me doing it.
It's a pricy business and if all 3 of us went on a regular basis it would cost way too much. I treated myself to some proper hairdressing scissors and Steffi's friends always think she's had it done professionally.....which is a good compliment for me! The only difference is.....I don't get a tip lol.

The style I wear determines how often I get my hair trimmed. When I wear it longer, I'll get it trimmed every 8 to 10 weeks. When I wear it shorter, then I'll get it trimmed every 6 weeks. I change the style at least every couple of years, sometimes more frequently. To me finding a good hair stylist is like finding gold. I'm in search of a one right now, mine moved out of state.

I have not had good luck going to any of the less expensive salon chains. I do realize that a bad cut can be had at any salon, it's just that it happens to me more often at places Hair Cuttery. That's where I got my last trim. I had a picture of what I wanted, and the cut I was given is not even close....I'm really not happy with it. Fortunately, my hair grows fast, and so I'll go somewhere else for my next trim.

Places like the Hair Cuttery charge about $25.00, and I add a tip which makes it $30.00. The salons I prefer charge about $40.00, with tip $48.00.

Getting my hair cut well is my one splurge. SC, you are not cheap, you do what works for you!

Southern Comfort: I can't say as I don't know if that is expensive in your area or not. Where I live, I go to a women's salon in her home and she pays taxes and all that. I get my hair streaked (to even out the gray) and get it cut for 35.00 about 3 x a year. So I give her 5.00 as a tip. If I went to a salon around here I would pay at least 30.00 for a cut and 50.00 for the highlighting. So I figure that is a really good deal. Sometimes if I have it I leave her a little more. So I think you have to consider what you, not your husband, would pay to have your hair cut at a regular salon.
Hope that is helpfull! xoxo

Well, I try to go twice a year now that I have cut most of my hair off, just to keep up.

The last time, (I thought this was such a cute name) it was,
Shear Pleasure... isn't that inventive! I had the cut and the highlights put in, bought some gel, and threw it all on a credit card...

When the bill came in, my Husband sitting at the table quietly, looked up at me while I was cooking and asked calmly, Darling, did u go to a place called shear pleasure and spend a hundred bucks?

I guess the look on my face said it all! That definitely didn't sound good!
ROFLMAO
good thing he has a great sense of humor!

I don't get haircuts any more. What hair I have I am letting it grow. I have a short pony tail now. The way it is growing by the time I am 70 it may come to my shoulders. My older brother never cut his and it is still down to his waist. He uses 4 hair ties to keep it bottled up, but when 'he' takes off his hat he has less hair than I do and I am only a year younger.
