Most wood floors can be kept clean by first sweeping or vacuuming with a floor nozzle to remove most of the surface dust and dirt, then damp mopping with clear water (dip a sponge in clear water, squeezing it out so that the mop is barely damp, almost dry). Use very little water and rinse your mop thoroughly after each use since excess water can dissolve protective coatings, alter the color of the wood and raise the grain to roughen the surface.

If your floors are not dirty enough to need mopping every week, then you should not do it, as it will wear the floors faster, not to mention waste your time. Simply sweeping is often all they need.

If need to restore the shine to your wood floor after you get it clean, try damp mopping it with 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons furniture polish in a gallon of warm water. Vinegar is also useful for removing any soap residue or build-up, but should not be necessary every week. ..

Mop it, I like to use Murphy's oil soap. Then use old towels or a dry mop to clean up the dirty water. The dirty water is drying on the floor currently and making the streaks.

If it is a large area use two buckets of water and two mops. Put hot soapy water in one bucket and plain water in the other. Using rag mops, not sponge mops first wet mop with the soapy water. Then use the other mop to dry mop, as the dry mop becomes dirty rinse it and wring it out really well in the plain water. Do this in sections so that they wet mop water doesn't dry in the floor. Change the mop water as it gets dirty.

To keep my wood floors beautiful, I use, 1/4 cup white vinegar in a 32 ounce spray bottle, topped off with water. I spray as I mop with a terry cloth mop that I throw into the washer when I am finished. The smell goes away when it dries and rinsing is not required. This solution also works for windows and mirrors.

I use Armstrong floor cleaner and a red mop I bought that has a flat woolly removable pad on it. Mop head snaps off and on and can be washed. Excellent and no streaks.
