Harming yourself is illegal so the government can detain people who fail at killing themselves and council them. Without such a law they would not have power to do anything

The gov't does not want you to hurt yourself or anyone else. So in that sense they will try to stop you from hurting yourself. As for being illegal it is not for the most part. Suicide is not even considered murder because murder is the unlawful killing of another.

Some States have called suicide a felony but obviously no punishment was attached since the person was dead. Attempted suicide is a crime in some states. The basis for this could be that the states want to avoid people hurting themselves and find that for the good of society people that are willing to hurt themselves need to be taken care of before they hurt someone other then themselves.

It isn't. There is no jurisdiction in which suicide is illegal.

There would be no point to such a law, because the person who commits suicide is dead and can't be prosecuted.

I wonder what the punishment for committing suicide is?

I wonder if there is a way to enforce it?

But seriously, I do believe the law refers to "attempted" suicide.

So, if you want to commit suicide, make sure you don't fail --- or you will go to jail.

It's still murder. Hard to prosecute though.
