First make them improper fractions:
5 3/7 = 38/7
4 1/2 = 9/2

Then you have to find a common denominator (14)

Whatever you times the bottom by (to get the common denominator) do the same to top

38 X 2 and 7 X 2 = 76/14
9 X 7 and 2 X 7 = 63/14

Now add the top numbers (76 + 63) = 139

Answer 139/14 or 9 13/14
