I'm sure it's the fear of the unknown, but... like,.. we all know ghosts,.. they're USUALLY ethereal, whispy, never solid, not always humanoid, not always friendly or evil,.. sometimes silent sometimes noisy; but WHY are we scared of them?

Because we cannot control them. Like cats, they come and go as they please.

Good question. No, it is not the fear of the unknown. How many things don't we know a lot about but are not afraid of ?! A very intelligent question. I just cannot explain it. It is haunting, fear, that petrifies us. It is as if ghosts can come and take us with them... That is probably the fear. Have a star.

Like you said, fear of the unknown. Humans fear that which they do not understand. They cannot stop a ghost, they can't communicate, they can touch it. Ghosts are something which nobody can be 100% certain about. And this uncertainty causes fear.

most people tend to fear things they do not understand.
They don't know what to always to expect therefore they feel vulnerable. Humans tend to always want to be the highest predator or feared thing on the planet so that they have control because that is how human nature is but the possibility of ghost and spirits makes humans feel like they are threatened

I think part of the fear comes from the question...are we really alone. For example if you were sitting in your bedroom all alone reading a book and saw a ghost it would freak you out for the obvious reasons. But also..you thought you were alone but really aren't. Someone or something may always be watching you...in all your finest moments.

Modern culture and cinema in particular has taught us to be afraid of ghosts... so like sheep we follow. I'm not young, 6'4" tall, same wide and YES I'm scared of ghosts. Too many scary movies.

Some reasons why it scares me is because you can't run from them. You can't control them, like kill them in self defense for example. And can't call 911 or the police for help... what are they gonna really do about something they can't control?
Sometimes I want to see a ghost though because my boyfriend died last year and I want to see him again. But even if I did see him, I'd be afraid it was not really him, maybe a demon posing as him to get close to me.

I think that people are only scared of them because we cant explain why they are here or how...
Personally if i see a ghost it will be a feeling of comfort for the afterlife.

The thing is, ghosts are supposed to be the spirits of dead people.
Unfortunately, we have learned that many people are nasty and in our current society are more than willing to be nasty to other people.
Without any policing (I assume there are no ethereal police) people who are dead are free to do what they want.
So it is more an indictment of people willing to terrorise other people without any consequence.
If people weren't so nasty to people in life, perhaps they wouldn't be so crappy in death.

Because most of us don't understand. So to be fair do you blame people for feeling scared if they feel a presence near them.
