Not my grandma but my great grandma. I thought her cooking was wonderful and only know as an older adult did I find out from the even older adults that I was the only one. She was so poor and used very poor quality ingredients. Maybe it was the love that made it taste good to me. She always made homemade applebutter and coincidently I just bought the ingredients today to make a batch for Christmas gifting. Not exactly her recipe but she taught me. She had no recipes-everything was made from whatever she had on hand.

My grandmother use to make red-eye gravy (for bisquits) , but she made it with spicy sausage rather than ham. Just thinking about that makes my mouth water. Haven't been able to find her recipe though. Trial and error now I guess.

All from scratch: wonderful biscuits and apple pie. Scalloped oysters, made with soda crackers. Don't have the recipes, but they should be easy to find. Wonderful memories!

They would have all been written in German so would not be able to read them myself. The only I have that my mom translated was for sauerbraten. Beef roast marinated in vinegar for 3 days and the gravy has gingersnaps. mmm
