At that point the western frontier was not very far from the east coast. The Appalachain mountains marked the western boundry. The British arrived from the sea in the east.

The Revolutionary War actually extended much farther than the Appalachian Mountains. George Rodgers Clark won several battles in what we now call Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois which were very important because they established America's rights to all of the land up to the Mississippi River when they were in Peace negotiations with Britain.

On the Sea most of the battles won by Americans (and there were hundreds, not just John Paul Jones victory over the HMS Serapis) were won by privateers. Privateers were privately funded ships that were authorized by the United States to capture and then sell the ships and cargo they captured for their own profit. They were basically state sanctioned pirates.

The Americans found themselves having to build a navy from scratch at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Not only a navy, but a navy that could contend with the most powerful navy (the British Royal Navy) in the world. Obviously, the new nation didn't have the resources (financial that is) or time to build a fleet of 1st rate ships of the line that could contend with Britian's best. So they focused on lighter 4th and 5th rate frigates that could be used as commerce raiders. These ships were very versatile, able to out gun smaller vessels and outrun any more powerfully armed ships. Google John Paul Jones to find out more about the Continental Navy, fascinating subject.
