at the current rate of computer power, it is estimated that by 2035, the computer could surpass the human brain as far as processing. If you look at the equation ,2,4,8,16,32,64, and double the speed at which each time is doubled, singularity could be nearer than anyone thinks. with nano technology combined with processing speeds ever increasing, larger memories, you would be a fool to deny that at some point, the computer will be able to anticipate, surpass, and go beyond the human ability. then we are in trouble. The phrase, a computer can only do whats its programmed to do is ok until the computer learns how to program itself.

I hope that when this event occurs we will not lose our free will My belief is that when technological singularity is achieved we will be able to call ourselves an accomplished species. Human history is classed by the age we are in. The stone age, the iron age, and so forth. Currently we are in the information age which may lead us into the materials age were we will be able to manipulate matter into to anything we desire. I just wish that people leading the revolution consider those at the bottom of the economic ladder. When will get there? When manufacturing reaches a nanomolecular level. 2020 is the date given by some.

My world or at least my home is a singularity. We are the only independently, self contained house in our county. We are the most high tech self powered home in Northwest Washington state. We are almost 100% carbon neutral. We are solar and wind powered. Our backup generator runs pure soy diesel. Our heat, cooking, and hot water are fueled by wood. I know the power machines are smarter then me, but I did build the system and house by my self. I think we are a long way from world singularity. But the technology is good enough to achieve it now.

Probably never - unless we know how god gave human beings the ability to think.

Machines need to be programmed by humans to perform functions. It does not do things out of it's own "free will". The knowledge the computer has is what humans program into it. For it to reach it's own intelligence, humans must give it "free will" so that it will be able to think for itself.

Human bodies are machines. We have set functions, programmed into us when to eat, sleep, defaecate, etc. But, we also have "free will" where we can think for ourselves, make our own decisions, create things, etc. Now, what is this "free will" - consciousness? If we are able to create machines, what created us (and gave us the ability to "think")?

People have been predicting this since the dawn of the technology age. It's possible humans will be overtaken by machines and computers, but they are only capable of what they are programmed to accomplish. They know no more than what they are programmed to understand.
