***WARNING SPOILER, DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW***
I liked the book I Am Legend, which incidentially is really a short story and the rest of the book is taken up with short scary or disturbing stories.
It is an introspective book...meaning that there is very little character interaction. It is from one person's point of view and basically about a bacteria that turns everyone in the world as far as our hero knows into Vampires. Everyone that is except our 'hero'. He in turns talks about how he makes stakes to kill the vampires (mostly friends and family who have turned) and he realises that in the vampire legend there are many other things that may or may not work like sunlight. So he starts to 'try' the legend. He finds there is a difference between 'living' vampires and 'dead' vampires, and he finds out that the 'living' vampires have a pill that halts the progression of the illness somewhat and they are giong to create a new society. In the end he realises that he doesn't fit into the society because he is not infected and becuase there is only one of him he has become as terrifing a legend to them (because he kills them) as much as they are to us.
Now, as an adult I think it is an excellent book but, if you are under 18...I think there are some themes that are very adult and so I would tell you to wait to read it until you are older. Keep in mind that the book is not an action book it is slow moving and more about what this guy finds out about himself and how he feels than what the movie is showing.

The book I am Legend is more of a short story over perhaps 100 pages. The idea behind the book is : A unknown pathogen has infected the worlds population and turned them into vampires. Civilization as we know is over and Robert Neville is the only human left on Earth that he is aware of. His days are spent fixing up his home from the nightly vampire attacks, foraging for food and supplies and killing the vampires who become essentially comatose during the day. Robert is not a scientist in the book but has taught himself by reading books. He's trying to discover what caused the "virus" and how to "cure" it. Now if you truely want me to ruin the story for you keep reading if not stop now! A large portion of the vampires have discovered a way to supress the beastial side of themselves and do not need to feed on blood. However they are still very much allergic to the sun and still redered immobile during the day but are still very much awake. Because the "good" vampires look the same as any other Neville has been killing them as quick as he can find them. Thus he's become a sort of living Legend/Boogeyman to these people and they need him to stop so they can live. Not sure how the film version will be but thats the jist of it. Sorry if I spoiled too much.

Synposis
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable…and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City…and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by “the Infected”—victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville’s every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

I don't know how closely the movie will stay with the book storyline. The book was very good and easy to read. You should be able to finish it within a few days. Good read.
