I had a male for 9 years. He was the size of my finger when I got him and was very manageable for about 5 years then turned excessively aggressive. I couldn't handle him any more and at 3/12 feet was pretty scarey. He bit me a few times also. He died before I could decide what I was gonna do with him.
I would NOT recommend an iguana as a pet, especially for a child.

Iguanas are hard to keep healthy. They only grow to a healthy size if fed correctly. when buying froma eptstore they will tell you stuff like feed it iceberg lettuce and give it a hot rock, neither ne of those should ever be given. if you are looking in to one please do ALOT of reaserch. I have had 4 iguanas in my life. all great pets, unfourtenetly for the first 2 I follwed the rules of the pet store, they only lived a year or so. My other LOVED to have his harness n and go for walks with me and the dogs, he was a sweet heart up until his last day. I would LOVE to own another iguana some day.

They make great pets IF IF IF you can properly house and care for them and accept that many can become quite aggessive at times, despite early handling. If you can provide the very large habitats they need, the amount of heat, UVB, and humidity and supply a pool large enough to soak in, plus afford a nice varied salad with vitamins every day, then you might want an Ig. Learning how to handle a 5-6 foot lizard with razor sharp claws, hundreds of teeth, and a tail full of spikes that it will try to hit you with can be tricky, but is not impossible. Ig's are wonderfuly for the truly dedicated and commited reptile owner. I would recommend you read everything you possibly can about them and try to meet and handle several adults. There are rescue organizations that are over-run with unwanted adult Ig's for these very reasons.

I have never had an iguana, but one thing I do know about them is that they die very easily. A lot of people cannot keep them because they die. They need a lot of maintaining.

Iggys bite and whip. I have had mainly whippers. They also get very large and need a ton of room. Start with a gecko or bearded dragon.

I would have to say they're pretty boring as far as activity. Cool to look at, but not much else to do with them. I never owned one, but my sister did, and she lost interest and eventually let him die. Sucks! I should report her for cruelty for that.
