how can any prospect be untouchable when it comes to a trade for johan bleeping santana???? I feel the teams wanting him are really greedy. You're getting the best starting pitcher in return. how can anyone be untouchable is mind boggling to me.
so what if you trade joba, so what if you trade buchholz, so what if you trade kershaw. I would disagree on reyes, but even reyes for santana is not that bad for the mets. good pitching will always be better than good hitting. I just dont get why teams are holding out these "special players" that are unproven.....you're replacing him with the best in the business. what is that not an improvement i dont know what is.

ps. if im the freaking twins (fortunately im not).......i'd request nothing but the #1 prospect in return (it means joba/bucholz/ellsbury/kershaw/etc) for johan otherwise no trade.
no way should the twins settle for a "less than an untouchable" and a bunch of lesser prospects for the best pitcher in baseball....just disgusting.

Craig S, 100% correct!
you're getting a cy young award winner, best pitcher in the majors. while you're giving up a top prospect......who is not proven and theres a chance he might not even be great.......what you're getting in return is not a chance, not a risk, but the best.

jackdupp, whoever trades for johan will have to sign him to a long term deal because johan will have to prove the trade (hes got a no trade clause).......a team wouldnt want to trade for johan just to have him one year......

for those of you that think a team that trades for johan is only getting him for one year???? come on, no team would give up all that just for 1 year of johan. it's common sense to know that the team that trades for johan will lock him up. johan has to prove the trade too.

legends, i agree with what you said, the fact pointed out that Johan is in his walk year and the twins does not have the upper hand is absolutely true, but these teams that want to trade for him know that if they don't offer something better to the twins, the OTHER team will get johan. thats why the twins have the upper hand. it is an auction and the highest bidder will be the winner, advantage to the twins. the yanks can't have the red sox get johan, vice versa.

the yanks CAN NOT have boston getting johan.......that is just not possible for the yankees to have.

I couldn't agree with you more, and thankfully most intelligent GMs understand the value of trading "prospects" for proven talents. Sure, there's a chance that a Bucholz or Kershaw or Huhges or whoever could be a good pitcher, but there's a 100% guarantee that you're getting a 28-year-old who happens to be the best pitcher in baseball and just entering his prime years.
Of course there's a risk that Santana could get injured, but the same thing goes for those young prospects. Just think of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Or go back a few years to the Mets' awesome tandem of Bill Pulsipher and Paul Wilson, who ended up with 50 wins between them for their careers.
I'd add, too, that one of the ironies here is that Santana was never really considered an amazing prospect. He was lost once in the Rule V draft, and later dealt for the great Jared Camp.

No team is going to trade away two TOP prospects right away. No matter how good Johan is. The teams right now, know that it is going to take alot to get Santana, so each team is helping each other out in the sense that they are slowly driving up the price, not going crazy right away. the yanks and red sox are the two front runners, and they both arent willing to give away too much potential, as they shouldnt be, they have some guys that could be better than Santana in five years. As a red sox fan, i would trade away Crisp, Lester, another MLB player ( maybe a bullpen guy), and two mediocre AAA players. I think that giving the twins losing hunter, crisp would make a nice replacement, and lester has the potential to be an ace in two years. The twins really have no bargaining chips, as if they are out of it by the allstar break, Santana's price will drop drastically. Buchholz and Ellsbury are untouchables in my mind, because Buchholz is going to be needed to replace schilling or wakefield, and he is alot cheaper of a risk then Johan is. Ellsbury should be off the table, because he should be starting in CF, where he will turn into an allstar quickly, think Grady Sizemore. All in all, i think Johan is going to go to either the sox or yanks for less than you think. the twins will get some young talent, but lets face it, Santana doesnt want to pitch in a losing city. Neither the sox or yanks are willing to give up TOO much potential talent for one guy that will cost a fortune if he goes and blows out his arm. Plus, the red sox dont even need Santana. I think having him would definitely put them over the top, but they have the same team they won the WS with last year, and they also had the best record in baseball. This team is not bad, they dont NEED anything, its just adding insult to injury at this point. that is why they arent going to do anything crazy.

Santana's value is determined by that of the market of teams who are after him. If 10 teams only want to trade you a lump of coal then Santana is worth in effect a lump of coal. If the consensus deal is along the level of a Kenndey + Melky and a player to be named later - then you have to deal w/ the fact that that is what Santana's value IS. If they do not pull the trigger on WHATEVER they can get - they will lose him for NOTHING.
The other teams aren't being greedy - they are being smart. They don't NEED to give up that much for Santana since he is in his walk year. The Twins are the ones behind the gun and if you understand anything about negoitations you always try to deal from a position of strength. The Twins do not have the upper hand and are going to have to settle for fair market value for Santana. The is business not a trade on the school yard. Santana's value is whatever the Twins get for him. Nothing more and nothing less.
You try being a company selling a pair of shoes for $5000. When 10 customers come up to you and none of them offer you more than $100 you have no choice but to drop your price, because otherwise you get $0 for the shoes. It's supply and demand. The consumer sets the price. He who is willing to pay the most gets it. Whoever will give the Twins the best deal they will accept and as I said before - whatever price that is determines what his value is.

1. You can hang on to your prospect for a while and cheap and if they continue to do well its a better investment.
2. Santana is an FA next year, no one wants to give up 3 prospects they could have for a few years to get a guy for one year.
3. 3 Prospects that have 2-3 good years for 1-2 million all together or 13 million for one great year? I would personally take the prospects.
4. Re-negotiating with Johan Santana will be near impossible especially since he wants ARod money for a pitcher. I'd rather give a position player 20-25 million a year to play 162 games than a pitcher to play 34 games, on top of that, if you can't get any other good starters with the rest of the pennies you have after signing, you basically have to wait every 4 games before you win a game.
All in all I would prefer keeping the prospects, I do not doubt Santana's skill, but you can get so much more out of prospects then one star pitcher. You could even save the prospects and trade them out later for 2-3 above quality players and be better off than getting the star player. I would not give up my teams future for one year.

Hey if the idiot twins what to trade away every good player they have or let them be signed by another team I say go ahead. Of course, I am an Indians fan. But please let him go to the Mets, why they heck are the champions and the team that would have been there without all the dang injuries going for another player they do not need anyway. Noone in their right mind would give up a zillion dollars and a ton of prospects for Santana.

Santana a cy young winner is one of the best ever pitchers. If the Twins trade him, they should be excepted to get a fair trade in return for great rookies, prospects or players or pitchers, too. Anything else is a giveaway.

Santana has to approve of the team he's being traded to! I sure hope Cashman doesn't give up the whole farm for him because boston is in the lead with the deal,,however It was just reported Cashman and the Twins are on the phone, I guess the Twins are flip flooping with both boston and ny! I worry because Cashman might give up the farm just so Santana won't go to boston!
Edit
I know this King Filex! That's what scares me! Cashman will give the whole damn farm away!! Not JOBA!! JOBA JOBA JOBA!!!
Your funny KING! :))) Also you gotta remember this! Theo isn't gonna want santana to go to the yanks!! Because then we would have our BECKETT!!

WOW! if the twins make the trade with the rsox they wqould be total idiots! The best prosepects weould be from the yankees, but anyway, i believe they are being so selfish because santana could still be a free agent next year, while the prosepects could be future hall of famers for all we know! Or they can be busts, but either way, it is better to keep prospects.

Sanata was a top prospect (along with Joe Nathan) who the Twins got for A.J. Pierzynski.
They got top prospects in a trade before and want the same.
Santana "chokes" in the play-offs? He has an ERA of 3.72 in the play-offs, lower than that in games started, 3 or 4 "quality starts" in those games...it's not his usual level, but it is hardly "choking."
