I'm not sure what you mean by a "contributing profession," but a numbers cruncher could in general be an accountant or a research assistant. However, if he or she is clumsy (in the sense of being prone to making errors), then he or she may prove to not be very good at a job like that. Unfortunately, clumsiness or carelessness impedes a person's ability to perform almost any job.
