Or how did you reply?

No ulterior motives like trying to unload his wife on to you.

Somebody of the same sex asks you.

I would tell them (depending on who they were) that it really wasn't any of their business!

If somebody did ask me, and I was gay, I would tell them the truth. One would only lie, if they were gay and were embarrassed or felt bad about themselves. Smile, look them in the eyes say " Yes I am happy to say"

If I was asked that question and I am not gay, I would say "No I am not gay but I have many wonderful gay friends>" which is the truth.

Even though it's none of their buisness, I would say no. Or I'll say something like "I'm happy but I'm not gay" or "I'm straight but not narrow". In the past, people have mistaken me for a gay man just because I'm nice to people and like to talk a lot.

This is an odd question,
wouldn't the correct question be:

"ARE YOU GAY/BI OR STRAIGHT?"

Are you asking for what to say to a gay guy if you are
straight or are you wondering everyones sexuality?

Um, I'm not gay.
So I would probably say "No, I am not, why are you?"
and if they say yes be like "Oh, that's cool" and if their
not be like "Oh, ok" and just laugh it off or something.

I've been asked numerous times.
I just say no.

They have done and I when I said no one time this woman replied so you're bi-sexual then? I'm totally straight but I'm often mistaken for a gay man. I think it's because I'm polite to people. It's pretty sad that I can't be a gentleman without people assuming I'm gay.

I would say yes unless they were holding a gun to my head or a knife to my throat, then I would say whatever I thought they wanted to hear. I maybe gay, and I may be proud, but I ain't no fool, and I will survive!!

I'd say I'm half-gay. I like shorty's answer as well, but it's simply too long for a woman of few words such as myself.

i would say:
im not gay or bi or straight, i love who i love, and right now that happens to be a girl.

and if they still didnt get it i'd tell them that love has nothing to do with worldly thiings such as gender, race, or religion, etc. i'd tell'em that the power of love cannot be limited or defined and therefore cannot be labeled. and if they STILL didnt get it i'd tell'em i dont care what they call me cuz it wont be right anyways. =p yeah.

I'd say "Yes I'm gay, why?" ... Unless I thought they were a crazy homophobe who might try to beat me up or something, then I'd be like "I don't discuss my private life."

I would say, "It's not really any of your business, but since you were brave enough to ask, the least I can do is be brave enough to answer. And, the answer is, yes."

It would depend on who is asking and why they would want to know. I might reply it is none of their business, or I might say yes.
