to ask if he brought the booze or not?
does he think I want to hear him gripe about his day? or even care to talk to him at all....I just want the damn booze man!

When you are basically done ranting. You know towards the end a little? Yeah get up and basically shout and ask him, have you brought the booze or not? I mean it works for me, i ask questions like that after a rant. Not before it because it's just.. After. Good luck.

while he's ranting walk towards the cabinet, get a couple of glasses out, get some ice. he should see what you're doing and get the hint. if he's dense, just point both hands towards the glasses. surely he'll at least say "what?" and there's your opening.
