The country of origin for American immigrants tended to come in waves. Immediately after the civil war, there was a big influx of Irish, Scandinavians, and some leftover Germans who had been coming over for years. By the turn of the century, another big wave of immigrants came, this time from Southern Europe, mostly Italians and Greeks.
