My father has an annoying tree in the front yard and wants it to "go away." The city will remove it after it is dead. He hears that putting copper nails and/or copper wire in the tree will do the job. How many nails would be needed? The tree is 2 ft in diameter and 40 feet tall. Don't worry, there are plenty of other trees around. This one is growing too close to his house.

In theory if you completely remove the bark around the trunk in an area at least a foot wide. See the link below. If you could get the tree cut down to a stump, then you can drill several holes in the trunk and pour roundup into the holes. You will still have to remove the truck. You might see if someone would take the tree down for the wood.

Remove about a 6 inch band of bark all the way around the trunk of the tree

Copper nails will not kill a tree that size anytime soon. Like others said, cutting thru the bark all the way around will kill it right away. It will be evident that you did it though, It's called girdling the tree.

twist a wire tightly (and ur not telling us what KIND of tree) [so I can't tell u what tight will mean] around tree so that it crushes the bark - this will stop the circulation above the wire killing tree
