For instance, I just sprayed myself with some perfume that I got in Paris. It didn't remind me of Paris, but it reminded me of an apartment I used to live in near the beach. I remembered what it would sound like waking up, having to move my car from one side of the street to another every Thursday and Friday, going out the front door and all the wine and cheese parties I had there and all the stories we would tell at them.

What scent or smell does that sort of thing for you?

There is this distinct smell, a gritty smell I can not properly describe. I was cleaning my old laptop that I have not used in years. When I sprayed the the fan a ton of Iraqi sand powder came out. Its not a very pleasant smell and it made me think of that awful place. It was a beautiful place full of history, but for me it just holds to many bad memories. Our unit lost 3 people there. Not as bad as some, but certainly still sucked. I had known 2 of them personally. I thought of them and how they met their end. I thought of how I had not thought of them in 2 years now and that made me sad. I thought of the huge palaces. I thought of the people riding camels through the desert. I thought of how when it rained... and that only happened twice... how the whole world seemed to turn to mud. I thought of how amazing it was to see the ruins of Babylon. How such a great place could fall into nothingness. I thought of convoys. I thought of patrols. I thought of those nights when I had to stand guard and was fighting to keep awake. I thought of how much I missed my wife. I thought of how I hated every minute of fighting for something I did not believe in... the world government.

I had driven a couple of hours to another city and was entering a large office building. As I approached the outer door it seemed I was teleported to my Grandparents house 1000 miles away and 30 years in the past. I had to stop a moment and soak up the revived memory. The modern, 30 story office tower in Florida had not the remotest resemblance to my grandparents' 1920's frame home in central West Virginia, but none the less the memory was powerful.
It was a smell, the aromatic smell of granddad's pipe, the slight mustiness of the semi-enclosed porch and the sweet lilacs that grew up around the windows. I took inventory of my contemporary surroundings - A man smoking a pipe, the confederate Jasmine in full early summer bloom substituting for the lilacs, and a slight earthy mustiness from a brief shower that had just ended. It all combined to transport me back in time and place.

My grandfather grew oranges in Yorba Linda back when Orange County lived up to its name. When I was growing up, the entire extended family would visit the ranch house to celebrate the holiday seasons and other celebrations.

To this day, the smell of oranges reminds me of those very special childhood experiences I had when the trees that surrounded the house were filled with oranges or orange blossoms. Dozens of family members ate, played, and told stories on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other days of celebration on that ranch. It gave a young boy a feeling of family and community that hasn't quite been matched since, except when the sweet aroma of an orange is detected.

Great question and answers. Thanks for touching on this.

There are two scents that really bring me back in time.

One is the smell of 2 stroke racing motor oil, which takes me back to the dirt tracks where me and my buddies used to ride our dirt bikes at the only track in our country. It was dusty, noisy and really just a teenage guy's dream.

The other is the smell of Dewberry perfume oil, which my ex-girlfriend used to wear. She was an angel, unforgettable, and to this day whenever I get a whiff of that scent it still makes me smile.

Wood shavings. My grandmother had an old cedar chest which was a treasure trove for me when I was growing up. She had quilts and scarves and funny hats and gloves that all smelled of cedar. She would let me play dress up and tell me stories about each particular item. My mom has the chest now, someday it will be passed on to me.

Cigarettes, coffee and stetson cologne takes me back to my childhood. That's what my dad always smelled of. The smell of sausage frying also takes me back to my childhood...whenever I would spend the night at my grandmother's house, that's the smell I would wake up to. It's really very comforting.

Beauty bark reminds me of horse shows. It has the same effect on my mom.

We both did a lot of horse showing years ago, and there was ALWAYS fresh beauty bark in and around the arenas. Anytime we smell it, we both literally stop in our tracks.
