It's a controversial issue that people are talking about today.
It's relevant to gays who have a partner because of many legal problems, like if one of them is hospitalized or dies without a will, the "next of kin" would be called instead of his/her partner. So they might call a cousin who lives out of state and doesn't give a flip about the gay relative, except for the money. Then the partner would have to challenge it in court, and the results vary from state to state.
Also for making health care decisions if a gay partner is incapacitated, we want someone welove to makethese decisions. Gay marriage doesn't mean that churches would be required to perform and recognize them. It's mainly a legal contract and I don't see any way it threatens traditional marriage. It's so silly these people that are fixated, on what others do in private and how they want to meddle and restrict people's freedoms. Everybody is not born straight, so if you are, how does it threaten you if 2 gays sign a contract of marriage? They're not going to come to your old narrow minded church and demand to be married in front of you, so tend y'own biddniss..

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your use of the word "relevant", but I think what you're asking is 'What's the point?'

To that I would say, the same as with straight marriages. From a legal standpoint, it's a contract between two people pledging to live together, not commit adultery, and generally combine assets. From a spiritual point of view, it's two people pledging their love and faithfullness to each other. I don't see where sexuality plays a part in that either way.

Relevance to what???

I am going to assume you mean society and say that gay marriage is a bond much like a heterosexual couple would be married. They value each other and to show their commitment they are willing to wed. Straight couples can marry, why not gays?
