this occurred during the period we know as the renaissance. Many of the most sought after artists of the time were gay. Da Vinci and Michaelangelo were both flaming gay. They are also the ones hired by wealthy churches to do murals and sculptures and were the leaders in the field that all the other artists emulated. being gay, they used the most attractive male models they could afford.

Don't know. It might have been Hollywood/the media that did it to make him more attractive. He was dirty, smelly, and if he walked into many of the Christian churches today they would probably think he was like a homeless person or something, and some of them would probably throw him out. Near his crucifiction they beat him so much that he was covered in blood, and was definitely not very attractive then. Todd Agnew actually has a great song relating to this topic called "My Jesus". Would we recognize him if he walked down the street today?

I think there are two reasons why contemporary art tends to make him "better looking" in the eyes of our culture. One, as others have mentioned, is the hollywood effect.

But I think there is another explanation. (I'm writing from the perspective of someone in the US.) Christian denominations differ not just in doctrine, but in their spiritual approaches. Catholicism and older protestant traditions have traditionally imaged Jesus along the lines of "Christ as Lord". More recently booming evangelical strains in the US have emphasized "Jesus as my friend". Modern religious art not only makes Jesus look more handsome, but in my opinion it also makes him look less Middle Eastern, less deific, and more like a friendly, modern looking, western "ordinary guy. "
