Only if they have attained the age of 55 and played 400 games

Paul, the age has always been 55, but the number of games has changed (and goalies only need to play 250 games). I can't recall what the game total was in 1980 (not that it matters when you are the league's all-time leader in games played).....but yeah.....Gordie almost played to pension day!

Only if a team signs them to a contract. Unrestricted free agents don't receive a salary while in free agency.

It's still hard to believe Gordie Howe was only three years away from a pension when he retired from the NHL (if the requirements were the same in the early 80s).
