Can you think of any bands who've put out 2 (or sometimes even 3) amazing albums in a row?

Often, you'll get a band doing a GREAT debut & then the follow-up is a miserable failure by comparison. (eg: The Darkness)

Beatles: Rubber Soul/ Revolver/ Sgt. Pepper's.. (possibly rock's greatest 1,2,3 punch)

Some good choices down there!

Bryan-

I liked a few songs on it, but it seemed to be a pale imitation of the debut. It didn't do half as well on the charts...not that that's the ultimate gauge though.

Wow, a lot of my top ones are taken so let's see what I can come up with.

Dinosaur Jr. - Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, Bug

Jawbreaker - Unfun, Bivouac, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy

The Pixies - Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova

Husker Du - Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, Flip Your Wig

The Replacements - Hootenanny, Let It Be, Tim

The Jesus Lizard - Pure, Head, Goat, Liar

Explosions In The Sky - Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever, The Earth Is Not A cold Dead Place, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

The Flaming Lips - In A Priest Driven Ambulance, Hiot To Death In The Future Head, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, Clouds Taste Metallic

Great call on Sonic Youth. I definitely feel as if Sister needs to be in there.

Hmmm....

Blackmore's Night ~ Fires at Midnight ; Ghost of A Rose ;
The Village Lanterne
{Actually, their first two albums ~ Shadow of the Moon ; Under A Violet Moon ~ were great as well!}

Jethro Tull ~ Songs From the Wood ; Heavy Horses ; Stormwatch {I know Bursting Out was released before the last one, but it's a live album}

Mike Oldfield ~ Tubular Bells ; Hergest Ridge ; Ommadawn

Fleetwood Mac ~ Self Titled ; Rumours ; Tusk
{I know a lot of people don't think Tusk was as good, but it is. One of the reasons it didn't seem to sell so well was because a US radio station once broadcast the entire album, and people taped it it home!}

Pink Floyd ~ Meddle ; DSotM ; WYWH
Led Zeppelin ~ LZ 1, 2, 3 ... & 4!
And I agree with the 3 Beatles albums :)

There're so many good ones that have already been mentioned, so I won't mention them.

Although I'd say for Pink Floyd: Meddle, DSotM, and Wish You Were Here.

I'll go for little more modern tastes instead of the classic rock stuff I'd usually do...

Rage Against the Machine: RATM, Evil Empire, The Battle of Los Angeles

Pearl Jam: Ten, Vs., Vitalogy

Stevie Wonder: Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions

The Clash: The Clash, Give 'Em Enough Rope, London Calling

The Stooges: The Stooges, Fun House, Raw Power

David Bowie: The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (or Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and Aladdin Sane)

The White Stripes: De Stijl, White Blood Cells, Elephant

Ramones: Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket to Russia

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory

Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class

Iron Maiden: The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave

Mahavishnu Orchestra: The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Apocalypse

Okay...I turned back to classic rock...

Nothing can really top the Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt.Pepper's trio.

I'd have to make a personal honorable mention to Pink Floyd(the 3 albums sarah c gave), and the first several Zeppelin albums.

As far as recent stuff, I'm a big big fan of the first 3 Kings of Leon albums right out of the gate(Youth and Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak, Because of the Times).

I know I'm a ridiculous Pavement head, but for what it's worth:
Wowie Zowie, Brighten the Corners, Terror Twilite (although I think most Pavement fans would take out Terror Twilite and insert Crooked Rain at the front. No love for Godrich's record, I don't get it)

I'm a huge fan of Built To Spill's
There's Nothing Wrong With Love, Keep It Like A Secret, Perfect From Now On

Frank Black and the Catholics - self titled, Pistolero, Dog In the Sand (stupid Cult of Ray or he could have run 5). At least in respect to very good. The Pixies also have runs in either direction being interrupted by Doolittle which ends up getting filed under pretty good. Not solid enough top to bottom.

Wilco's current run from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost is Born and Sky Blue Sky is really good too.

I probably need to raise the bar overall, but I stand firmly behing the first two choices.

*************
Oh God, how did I forget the Radiohead group. That grouping is certainly in the conversation for me.

Oh man Rckts. I missed the Sonic Youth one's too. That's an amazing set.

I don't know the love that Elliott Smith will get, but I'm a big fan of self-titled, either/or, XO.

How about AC/DC: Highway to Hell, Back In Black, For Those About to Rock. They did that even with a lead change.

BTW Julia, I'm a die hard Zep Head but even the remaining band members don't think that Zep III was a success. Now if you go from IV to Houses of the Holy and then Physical Grafitti you have three in a row.
Oh, Zep III is one of my favorite albums by the way.

Queen- Sheer Heart Attack/A Night at the Opera/A Day at the Races
I put those right up there with Pink Floyd's Dark/Wish/Animals.

Fonzie, what was so bad about the Darkness' second album?

2007-11-29 17:23:42 · answer #10 · answered by B Rock 2 · 1 0

Ramones - Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket to Russia, Road to Ruin.

Queen - Day at the Races, Night at the Opera, News of the World

The Gathering - Mandylion, Nighttime Birds, How to Measure a Planet?, if_then_else.

Queensryche - Rage for Order, Operation: Mindcrime (Rage is criminally underrated).

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome to my Nightmare, Goes to Hell

King's X - Out of the Silent Planet, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska

Tom Petty - Damn the Torpedoes, Hard Promises, Long After Dark
