Richard's answer is correct. You do not "have" to go to traffic school, but if you do it will keep you from having a conviction on your DMV record. I am posting because Ryan is wrong. Driving at night without lights in violation of Vehicle Code section 24250 is one point under California's point system.

I don't think anyone needs to attend traffic school unless its ordered by a judge. Many states offer it so the violation won't go against your record. Since this isnt considered a moving violation I would say no. If California has a points system I would also doubt you receive any points. Getting pull over for headlights is just a revenue for the state.

No. You never "need" to attend traffic school. Doing so, though, in most places, keeps the 'points' for the ticket off your driving record and therefore off your insurance rates.
