HIV is a virus that affects your immune system. Your body can not fight off simple things like colds, flus, etc. Over time, it developes into AIDS... an incurable disease. (HIV is also incurable.) When you have AIDS, your imune system stops working, you look and feel like $#!%. Then you die. It is a slow and painful death. We are still looking for a cure.
Yes, it is sexually transmitted but can also be transmitted by the exchange of blood... for example, using a dirty needles (even dirty tatoo needles can transmit AIDS.)
People who have AIDS may be heroin or meth shooters who share or use dirty needles, highly-sexually active people who have un-protected sex, people who have had blood transfusions before the 80s. Babies can also have HIV if the mother has HIV or AIDS. (If/When you are around needles, make sure that they are brand new... fresh out of the package.)
HIV and AIDS are not transmitted by touching, sneezing or even kissing. The red ribbon is a ribbon of support for those with AIDS and the hope for a cure.

acquired immune diffiency syndrome
It causes your immune system to shut down and you can get sick very easily and die due to the fact that your immune system can't fight anything off. Over time your immune system gets worse and worse, until you die, usually of pneumonia.
You catch through mixing bodily fluid with other people (saliva is supposed to be safe but blood or other bodily fluids with an infected person will cause you to be infected). A person may not know they are infected for years, and will appear healthy and normal to everyone, including themselves.
