I have a 99 Cougar & every time it gets cold out the car will die when I do not have my foot on the gas. We have tried everything & can not seen to find the Problem. We are thinking that it is a vacumm leak But are not too sure. When the car acts up the breaks also do not have enough vacumm suction to work properly.

If any one knows how to fix this problem can they please share it with me. I am willing to try any ideas just to get the car through the winter. Thanks!

when the car is stalling tap on the idle air control motor, (by the throttle body). If the idle stabilizes, replace the idle air control motor! Dave

Need a little diagnosis here. The computer (ecu) reads the idle air control and the throttle position sensor to supply the correct fuel mix. The iac may be sticking open. If air enters the system from elsewhere the ecu does not know this. Therefore a vacuum leak would make your engine run lean. This would cause a stall at idle. the leak is not large enough to set the engine light (mil). At least you didn't mention the light. The brake problem is a large vacuum leak that is not connected to the engine. There is a hose from the vacuum booster, located on the master cylinder under the hood, to the intake manifold. This is probably the brake problem or the vacuum booster is defective.

This car is fuel injected, so there is no idle adjustment or choke to adjust. Idle speed is regulated by the engine management computer. The computer regulates idle speed by opening and closing the idle air control valve, base on information it receives from various sensors located in the engine compartment.

The power brake problem is from the low idle speed causing insufficient engine vacuum to operate the power brakes. A vacuum leak would cause the idle to be fast, not slow, on a fuel injected engine as the computer would add fuel to compensate for the additional air.

I would suspect the idle air control valve. These are typically located someplace on the throttle body. This valve can sometimes be removed and cleaned with carburetor cleaner. The port should be cleaned also. If the idle air control valve is still malfunctioning, you need to replace the valve.

You may also have a sensor that is malfunctioning. The one that usually is the problem is the Mass Airflow Sensor. This sensor is usually located between the throttle body and the air cleaner. This sensor can be cleaned. CRC makes a cleaner for this. It can be purchased at most automotive supply stores. Be sure to follow the directions on the can as you could damage the sensor, turning a $5 repair into a $50 repair.

While you are at the automotive parts store, see if they will connect a scan tool to the engine management computer diagnostic port. Most major automotive parts stores will do this for free. If you are having this much trouble, there is most like one or more trouble codes stored in the computer. This can assist you with finding out what is wrong.
