The reading performance of children in England has fallen from third to 19th in the world in a major assessment.

The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (Pirls), undertaken every five years, involved children aged about 10 in 40 countries.

Scotland also fell, from 14th to 26th. Russia, which matched it last time, was top of the overall achievement table.

They took away any authority teachers had, they let the little darlings think they owned the world. By "they" I mean successive governments since the late 70s. In order to be seen as progressive they promoted sex education, denigrated marriage and family, rewarded single teenage mothers, increased benefits for the hapless and the lazy. We end up with badly educated ill equipped parents who produce more of the same. Stop chucking money down the drain, get back to basics teach the three Rs, zero tolerance in the classroom, give power back to the teachers. Make hapless parents attend classes, better still make parenting class a part of the curriculum, might put the blighters off pro-creating or at least make sure the next lot are better at it. Stop introducing "progressive" ideologies, how hard is it for petes sake? "Hand on heads fingers on lips, you are here to learn I am in charge. It worked for millions in the past, sometimes the old ways are the best, and ultimately cheaper too.

You make a very common point about liberalism in general. They are quick to spend more money expecting results, but not so quick to realize that after spending more the standards haven't gotten any better. How about we get back to basics, spend less and get our education system back on track by using our heads instead! That's the conservative position.

Bureaucracy and paperwork cost a lot of money. After all someone has to be paid to design those *expletive deleted*, stupid assessment forms that teachers spend so much of their time completing instead of teaching.

Education is priority duty of the government and it must be given financial assistance instead of diverting funds to invade other countries.
