Any gift that is bought or made without the person in
mind.

When the giver gives something that they want the person to have not what the person would want, or need.

Like giving a person that takes a vow of poverty a fancy watch.( not good)
If you think about the person, spend time with that person you can go to the dollar store and put a smile on that persons heart. It took my husband years to get that.
Now he can spend nothing and give me what I want or spend thousands and get it right. He gives me presents for me not for him anymore. He use to think if it had a pricey tag that must be it..
A gift certificate for the latest diet if that is what that person wants NOT what you want for them

EDIT: I was just cooking dinner. I just remember the worst EVER!!!! Gift. My son's had the same second grade teacher all three of them. She would have the children in her class make their mothers this big beaded necklace. Each year I had a son in her class under the tree would be that same necklace. So proud my son's were of that necklace when we would leave the house not one of them would let me LEAVE HOME without it....So for years I wore one of them, then two and then three on Easter I saw that teacher in church and she looked at my necklaces and said how nice. I told her next year my son Manuel would be in her class and the next year would be Ruben. She better come up with a better craft idea and it better not be something that went around my neck or i would go to the school board lol.. That necklace and those big ugly beads was the WORST!

I can't say that I have ever gotten a "worst" gift. I appreciate any and all gifts that I get. I feel very lucky to get what I get. It is not the gift that counts, it's the thought that counts. To know they thought enough of me to get me a gift.

I am not going to go as far as saying that I have not taken anything back, because I have. If someone gets me something to wear and it don't fit (to small or to big) I do take it back and get the right size. But all in all, I appreciate every thing I get.

Birthday card from my exe when we were still married saying "Happy Fathers Day". He spent a lot of time picking out that one.

An electric broom from my MIl after my exe and I were separated and he refued to pay any CS and the electricity had been cut off.

She also specialized in buying the most hideous sweaters she could find, I know it was on purpose. Once she gave me really really ugly pyjamas in a size XXL. I wear a 5 or 7 here in Canada, that would be a small.

From BC Hydro and Electrical cutting off my electricity for xmas when it was about -15C

From my parents when I asked for a shotgun (bird gun) a doll and a doll buggy, just what EVERY 13 year old wants for xmas.

From another exe - nothing at all.

That q brought out a lot of supressed emotion.lol I can't beat any of that.Maybe small gifts but my grandparents were poor so any gift was more than they could afford. They gave us a pair of socks or mittens and my folks taught us to show appreciation and that has gotten me through many a 'worst' gift.

My grandson's girlfriend has a real talent for giving bad gifts. I'm 70 and she gave me a life size doll last year. It was all dressed up in satin and lace. I dont know what I was supposed to do with it. I finally put it out by the bus stop and it was gone in seconds. Hope it went to a little girl, not another grandmother.

Adult perfume for a 5yo. Deodorant for a 2 yo. The same knitted stocking style hat in any color and I had them all. Tickle me Elmo 3 years after its popular year and given to a 30yo. A trumpet playing cookie monster, crayons, art kits to any one over 20. These are all actual gifts from my grandmother. To make it better we get the hats every year. Most of her gifts are handmade or ordered from Avon and are either improper for the age or just plain tacky.

At one time we had a jeweler that would custom make items for us. One Christmas, my husband "surprised" me with a large hunk of gold hanging on a chain. It was the ugliest thing I have ever seen...It looked like a big gold tooth! It was hard to hide my disgust. Anyway, we got through the day and I tried to get use to it. A few days later, I just had to fess up. I told him about the ugly gold tooth. He said he thought it was nice. I asked him if HE would wear it. He said, "NO". I told him that I wouldn't either! I took it back to the jeweler, who burst into laughter when I dropped it on the counter. She knew I would be back! She said he was so proud of it, she didn't have the heart to tell him that I wouldn't like it. Anyway, we worked out an exchange and I got something that was a bit more "me"...all was right with the world and my husband now gives me gift certificates ;-)

Years ago my ex-mother-in-law asked me, in front of her daughter (who was skinny) what size I wore so she could buy my Christmas gift. I said, "Three", and she exclaimed, "Oh, Honey, you're not that small!" On Christmas Day, her daughter opened her gift from her mother and it was a gorgeous, expensive sweater. I opened mine, and it was a the most hideous polyester blouse with huge flowers on it in a size 14. (I was able to wear it a few years later as a maternity top.) I was 23 years old then and weighed around 100 pounds. Another year she got me a "Gut Buster". It was supposed to tighten your abs, but a lot of people ended up with broken legs trying to use it.

My husband told me about the worst gift he ever got. It was a basketball net from his brother. The reason it was so bad was all he had asked for that Christmas was a rim and a backboard. When he opened the net from his brother he assumed he'd get the backboard and rim too, but he never got them. lol Poor guy.
