HD stands for Hi-Def. Do you know if you have a HD TV? Unless you have an HD TV, then an HD DVR isn't going to do you any good. If you do have an HD TV, then you'll definitely want to get an HD DVR because it will allow you to view HD Channels and record HD Shows.

A High Definition DVR. Be careful because a regular DVD cannot interact with a HD DVD/R and the other way too.

HIGH DEFINITION -- DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER and yes the hd-dvr does NOT work with any other equipment than a high definition television receiver ---- go and talk to a salesperson at b. buy or circuit city and get some better take on all this new stuff at the electronic stores ---- look at the sale prices ---see what's there for you and make up your own mind .....
