I would recommend you book when you get there. I went in September this year and was in a crisis as to whether to book before or whilst we were there.
I think we made the right choice by booking there.
We booked our holiday with First Choice and there were 3 or 4 standard safaris in the brochure which we decided not to book as we thought we would get a better choice when we got there. This turned out to be right.
You can book with the beach boys (if you feel comfortable to do so - we didn't but lots of people did).
We booked it up with our First Choice rep when we got there. He was very knowledgeable about the best safari for us (we told him what we were looking for) he also had brochures of all the different lodges around all the different parks (Tsavo, Masai etc) for you to look at. The choice really is overwhelming.
One of the main operators were Somak Safaris. This is who it was booked with through the rep.
We went on a three day safari to Tsavo East and West staying at Voi Wildlife Lodge (Tsavo East) and the Serena Kilaguni Lodge (Tsavo West) it cost us £220 each. (Amazing value!!) The lodges were brill. I never thought for such little money they would be so upmarket. The ignorant view I had was squatting in the wilderness in crappy tents. They were the complete opposite.
The best thing we found about this company is we were not all packed into the safari vehicle like others we saw on the game drives. It seated 8 but there was just 4 of us in the vehicle. We were lucky enough to see the big 5 (elephant, water buffalo, lions, leopards and rhino) along with so many more amazing animals. Our guide/driver was very knowledgable and managed to spot the animals excellently.
I would recommend looking at the tripadvisor.com website and look up your hotel. The reviews people write up will sometimes include info about what safari they did and who they booked it with if you want to find out others.
Have a lovely time. It was an amazing experience for us and one day I would love to do it again!

I recommend the Sarova Mara Tented Camp, in the Masai Mara Reserve. I did this in Dec 2006, and will do it again in only 2 weeks! The staff is amazing, so well informed, patient, and take wonderful care of you. The "tents" are like something you would find at a 5-star resort, very private, and incredibly comfortable. And I can not say enough about the food-the most wonderful I've had in my whole life!! You should be able to google it and find the info. Good luck!

Yes you can book online, via email or over the phone. Use google to search for companies, and shop around a bit as prices do vary quite widely. Most good companies should have a good driver who knows the area well, and can tailor the outings to whatever you fancy.

it will be much more economic to book there with either mombasa north tours or any other safari operator when you get there including the beach boys, the genuine ones always carry a card from their companies that they represent
