How do you check the transmission fluid level on a 1995 bmw 318i?

park on a level surface, start the car, let idle for a few minutes, leave running and check the dipstick...

You are not going to like the answer, but this is how it is with ZF transmissions with life time fluid.

Jack up the car and put it on 4 jack stands.
Go under the car, take out the transmission fill hole bolt located at right side of the transmission. Should be 17mm hex bolt and very tight.
Put your finger in the hole to check the level. The fluid should be just below the hole in room temperature.
