modern fridges that have molding around the door can be opened from the inside. older ones that open with a handle do not.

Once upon a time, refrigerator (or ice box either) doors could not be opened from the inside because of the latches they closed with. So they were very dangerous, especially for little kids. Now they close with magnets and you don't have to unlatch them. I once had a refrigerator in a rent house on which the latch was broken. I had to use vice grips to open the thing. So no, it is not a myth, it's just not true anymore.

It depends on the type. Models over the past few decades have a magnetic strip that seals the door shut. A normal person can open that from the inside. Sometimes small children can't though.

Older models had a latch on them. If you were inside and the door shut and latched, then you had to have someone open it from the outside.

A fridge door can be opened from the inside only if it is not blocked in any manner from the outside.

Both.

Old refrigerators could not be opened from the inside. I remember seeing public service announcements as a child warning to never play inside an old fridge.

But newer refrigerators can be opened from the inside.

Myth.

fact-sort of. unless you're very strong, maybe you could kick it open. but it is exceptionally hard to break the vacuum seal from the inside, especially with gravity working against you if the fridge is abandoned and lying down, especially dangerous as it's usually kids-not particularly strong-who crawl into them. they can fit, and it seems like a good idea at the time.
i guess if the thing isn't lying down and the kid leaned their weight against it it would just open...problem i've always heard, even with newer ones, is when they're lying down.

The original refrigerators could not. After many deaths from abandoned ones laws were passed that they have to be able to be opened from the inside.

Depends on what kind of latching system they use. Modern magnetic catches are no problem. But old-style latches did indeed lock children inside from time to time.
