OK so it's a bit of a pain when you have a calculator somewhere, but warm up your grey matter! You just need to work out what you need to multiply the denominator by to make 100.

12 x 9 = 108 - too high
12 x 8 = 96 - too low (but close)

So you know it's between 8 and 9. You need to get 4 more, so how are 12 and 4 related? 4 is one third of 12, and 1/3 = 0.333 recurring.

So 8.33 x 12 = 100 (approx), so multiply your numerator by the same to get your percentage.

5 x 8.33 = (5 x 8) + (5 x 0.33) = 40 + 1.66 = 41.66%

Percent means 'parts of one hundred' so you need to convert your twelfths into hundredths. this can be done by two methods.

1 Multilpy the fraction by 100 so
5 x 100 = 500
12 x 100 =1200
so you get 500/1200
Now that you have 12 100's you need to divide your numerator (500) by the same so
500/12 = 250/6 = 125/3 = 41 2/3%

2 Just divide the numerator (5) by the demoninator (12)
so 12 into 5.000000 = 0.41666 recurring.
Multiply by 100 = 41.666%
