If you have 7 girls on a bus and each girl has 7 backpacks and each backpack has 7 big cats and each big cat has 7 kittens how many legs do you have on a bus?

at first you would think it would be 10990.
7x2 for the girls.
7x7x7x4 for the legs of the big cats.
7x7x7x7x4 for the legs of the kittens.

but the answer of course is 14. key word 'on'. the cats are in a backpack, therefore not 'on' the bus.

Assuming the backpacks and cats are also present on the bus, which you implied but did not specifically state:

There are 7 girls with 2 legs each.
There are 7^3 = 343 big cats with 4 legs each.
There are 7^4 = 2401 kittens with 4 legs each.

So, the total number of legs is
Total legs = 7*2 + 343*4 + 2401*4
Total legs = 14 + 1372 + 9604
Total legs = 10990

If all those things are on a bus
you have 49 backpacks,49*7 big cats and 49*49 kittens
so there are
14 +49(7+49) *4=10990 legs

9604 + 1372 +14 +2 = 10992
