Why would you choose that gender?

A girl, hands down.

Why?

Boys are easier to raise, and definitely cheaper. Boys have less hair to deal with, fewer clothes, definitely less shoes, are less emotional, puberty is less of an ordeal, and you tend to worry less about their safety.

However, girls are more affectionate (with their dads, at least - the father/daughter thing). Into adulthood, a girl is more likely to be sensitive and attentive to her parents. (The whole point of family is to have close relationships).

An adult daughter is less likely than a son to have as many work obligations and financial responsibilities, and is more inclined to be physically and emotionally attentive to elderly parents.

Boys grow up and have things to do, and tend do be less attached to the family.

So, give me an only-child girl any day of the week.

I would choose to have a boy (I'm a female). I love interaction with males just because they are the opposite sex and different. I have always found males a lot easier to get along with and more easygoing. (I'm not being sexist, just my personal observation). Not like having a daughter wouldn't be an awesome experience, but I would make a son my first choice because I think raising him would be a bit more rewarding and interesting, what with the dynamic of different gender.

I would choose a girl. I would really like to have a baby boy one day, but I MUST have at least one girl.

I would choose a girl because I relate to them better. I have no brothers so I didn't grow up around boys and I really don't know much about them.

I'd leave it to chance, because I like being around both boys and girls.

I really don't see how they'd act so differently. The question sounds a lot like "if you could only have one child and you could choose its hair color, which hair color would you choose and why?" Do I care about something so trivial? SHOULD I care...?

Well I wanted at least one daughter. And with four births didn't get there once. I really wanted to be able to nurture a young girl into woman hood. But I got to help my 2 sons grow into excellent young men. (We lost one at 2 days of age and another to leukemia at 11). Shopping for a tux is different than shopping for a prom dress.

I used to think it would be a girl. But now I know better and it would be a boy. Why? Because I'd like to keep my hair and my clothes, make up, jewelry.

I have 2 stepkids, a boy and a girl. The boy is so much easier to handle than the girl. He is less stubborn.

I would never choose. Nature maintains a 50/50 balance for a reason.

I personally don't care as long as the baby is healthy. My wife would love a daughter, and I hope she gets her wish because I know she'd love that.
