The only definition I've heard was from the untrustworthy Ted Kennedy. Yet his definition doesn't even make sense. He called it both mock drownding and said it activates the gag reflex. That doesn't make sense! The gag reflex would make you throw up. Drownding, on the other hand makes your windpipe close up, kind of like an asthma attack. So which is it?

Waterboarding is a torture technique that simulates drowning in a controlled environment. It consists of immobilizing an individual on his or her back, with the head inclined downward, and pouring water over the face[1] to force the inhalation of water into the lungs

Kennedy is correct. The prisoner being waterboarded believes he or she is drowning and begins to gag and choke.

You are laid flat and a rag is shoved in your mouth.....water is poured into your mouth until the rag is soaked, so you cannot inhale air, just water, the rag is pulled out of your mouth just before you black out...it does simulate drowning, as you are inhaling water, and it does affect your gag reflex, as you have a rag shoved in your throat. if done correctly, the person does not die, but the person thinks they are about to.

I have been water boarded so here goes. They wrap a T-shirt around your face while you are kneeling, with your hand tied behind your back. They dunk your head upsidedown in a bucket of water, and hold it until you start squirming, then they release. They do this over and over and more time each time till you cave like a little school girl.
