The clinic I went to suggested getting it done between 28-32 weeks. Any time before then and you might not get a really good picture and any time after that and baby will be too big and taking up too much room to get a good picture. And since that's exactly what you're paying for( an optimal picture) then it's best to wait to the opportune time.

you can do it now. I mean it depends on what you want to see. By six months your baby already looks like a baby and has facial features and everything so you will get some nifty pictures out of it. 3d ultrasounds are purely optional so just anytime you feel you want one go for it. I would say now is great, relative to first trimester or early second trimester because now you actually get to see your baby and his/her face and features , it is more intresting than if you see a little blob at 6 weeks pregnant.

They say its best between 24-28 weeks along because the baby has enough tissue to look like a baby but small enough to still get good full pictures.

anytime after week 20 you will see good details...But only get ultra sounds that are ordered by your doctor. Vanity Ultra sounds aren't always done correctly. Congrats on your pregnancy and Good luck!

Now, you'll have the best view and best chance of getting a good crotch shot for the babies gender.
