9 out of 10 giraffe pairings occur between males.
75% of sexual activity between female Bonobos is homosexual.
Of 3168 sexual encounters, 37% were same sex acts between Seahorses.
A quarter of black swan families are parented by homosexual pairings.
1 in 5 Mallard pairs consist of male-male homosexuals.

Yet studies of human homosexuality claim the number's near 10 percent. Doesn't that seem a little low, in comparison to animals? (Aside for social and religious pressures, the actual number of gay people, including those in the closet.)

I feel that animals and humans are pretty much equal -- but quite frankly, animals don't have to put up with a lot of the sh!t that humans do.

Most of society has been contaminated with common religion; a practice that generally rules homosexuality unnacceptable.

In addition, gay people are often treated with extreme disrespect. I don't know what it's like where you live, but where I live, gay people are called "f@gs" "fxcking homos," "gayfags," etc. People beat the sh!t out of them on a daily basis. And that's not the least of it, but the truth of how they're treated here would most likely get me a violation.

Think about it.. Either you pretend to conform to society's definition of "normal," hence, pretending to be straight, or you go to "Hell," and are treated like sh!t.

Many humans don't want to own up to that, and I don't blame them. But I have a higher respect for those that have the guts to own up to their orientation.

Animals, on the other hand, don't have religion. They don't descriminate much at all, actually. There's no one to tell them it's "wrong."

I think that in reality, the numbers for humans would be pretty much the same--we just can't prove it, because I think so many people are just afraid to come out of the closet.

Of course, it's possible they just don't want to come out -- I hear the guys in there are pretty hot.

Animals don't have the religious right to contend with. My high school had slightly more than 300 students in grades 9-12 while I was there. In my graduating class alone (Smaller than the classesx below it) there were over a dozen who were gay men and lesbian women. This, however, we only found out years later. I can't believe that my HS was unique or that there was something in the water in my home town. I suspect that the actual percentage of gays to straight is much higher. I now live in a city of under 100K. Our gay bars are packed every night. And the turn out for Gay Pride day in June stops traffic.

Aside from the social stigma open homosexuality has among humans, the reason animals display homosexual behaviour more than humans (especially in mammalian species) is due to the fact that not all homosexual behaviour in animals is a naturally occurring biological characteristic as it is in humans. Many animal species use homosexual behaviour to express dominance over each other, and for other behaviourial reasons. For example, male chimps will often perform homosexual acts on other males lower than them in the social hierarchy in order to express their dominance over the weaker male.

As much as it looks like it, I DIDN'T just nick that off Wikipedia. =)

Probably because animals don't judge, condemn, discriminate against, ostracize, or bash the gay members of their species the way humans do. Animals don't have religious beliefs that tell them that homosexuality is bad and wrong.

OTOH, there is no good way to know for sure how many humans are either homo- or bi-sexual as we don't really know how many people are in the closet.

The textbook answer is that nobody knows how many gay people there are.
The estimate is 10%, but that is only the estimate. I think it is a little low.

Animals of course don't have guilt issues. They just do what comes naturally.
People often don't do what comes naturally, but what is expected.

These statistics set fire to the fundy notion that homosexuality is unnatural.

Because animals do not care. Alot of homosexuals and bisexuals are pretending to be straight. There is no way of knowing how many people are in the closet, scientists have no way of knowing that. I know two married people who are homosexual, in the closet. No one else knows they are homosexual. Its really sad that they have to hide like that. They both know that their families would literally disown them. I think that it is alot higher than scientists are thinking, because they are going on anonymous surveys and despite being anonymous, people lie on them.

Because gay animals don't have to worry about their family and friends dis-owning them, losing their job, and getting attacked by homophobes.
