he's a little russian tortoise and lives in an underbed storage box (not under an actual bed:). it's almost transparent so i stuck photos of plants etc from magazines on the outside with sellotape but he seems to think he can get through. does anyone have experience with that? would some tape instead of the pictures be better - it would be stuck form the outside, but i suppose without the gap which is always there between the photos and the box. i hate to see him trying to get out like that :(

Russians tortoises are burrowers. I've kept my baby tortoises in setups like yours, and they always did the same thing. I give them hides and they go in there and try to dig. They're just trying to dig a burrow, which is a natural instinct. I don't think pictures will make a difference. I know alot of people use a couple of inches of soil in their enclosuresheyt can dig, but I've always kept hatchlings on newspaper because it's easy to clean. My Sulcatas live in my backyard, and have plenty to eat, so fortunately, they don't try digging out.

I wouldn't worry too much if i was you.It doesn't matter what you keep them in,if it goes for a wonder around and comes across a barrier then they all scratch about and try to escape.
it doesn't make any difference what you put around the sides or where you put it they will still try and escape, especially the smaller ones.
I have large leopard tortoises in a big garden in the summer and as soon as they get to the edge they always have a dig and try to escape.its in their nature. The only ones who dont seem to exhibit this behaviour are the really big sulcatas etc ,but they do as youngsters.
A plus to this is that it also helps keep their claws short and not to sharp,so stop worrying, its natural behaviour.

The pictures are just fine. You care enough to try and make him a nice house. The truth about turtles is that now matter how nice a house they have, they always want to be on the other side. They will always try to get out of anywhere you put them. If you want, let him run around the room for a while. He will be looking for a way out of there too.

They all do that, he was wild caught and knows there is a life better than that somewhere out there. Find out if it is a male or female and het it a mate, that will keep him busy. Try feeding him more too, he may be hungry, if the weather is warm, take him for a walk outside and let him graze.

Torts are very smart animals and have long memories. He knows where he is is not normal.

This is a sign of stress, and can be either no big deal, or a bad sign.

If the habitat is rock solid perfect- good size, temps, humidity, diet, etc.as per a good site like http://www.tortoisetrust.org or http://www.russiantortoise.org, then it is probably not a big deal.

Usually, however, there ARE some glitches in the cares that need to be addressed.
