While private servers are not technically "illegal", they are against Blizzards TOS. If you have an active account with WoW, you agree to this every time you login after a patch.

People can and do get banned for using private servers, it just doesnt appear to be very often. If your account has high-level characters, you may wish to weigh whether using a private server is worth losing access to them.

I had a friend show me the private server they played on, the game experience isnt even close to the real thing. To me private servers are for the people who have to go to the game sites and print all the cheat codes. Where is any challenge in that?

While playing a private server may not be illegal, running one is. Blizzard is one of the only game companies to successfully sue the operators of a private server site.

To the first answer...

Private servers are NOT illegal. And how can Blizzard ban an account that isn't on their servers?? If someone was playing on a private server, that means they aren't playing/paying on Blizzard's servers.

Anyways, your friend is either lying or is confused. A private server is someone who setup a server (ports, IP's, etc), installed the game client and patch and then modified the game to his liking (example: you can make the level cap up to level 255). Then he allows people to log into his server and he can give them power or just let them roam around.

The benefit of a private server is so you and your friends can play in peace or test out the new dungeons without Blizzard's monthly fees and other players.

Private servers are illegal, so you won't find them on the WoW list. If you get caught using one (they track your IP), you will likely be banned from the game.

If you're okay with this possibility, you'll have to talk to your friend about having a private server set up on your computer; however, it sounds like he doesn't know how to do it himself. It's a relatively complicated process.
