How long did it take you to get used to breastfeeding, and at first was it hard to make sure the baby was getting enough and did your nipples get chapped and did it hurt to even put the laniosh medicine on it, or whatever that is called?

I've never breastfed personally, but my wife does. She says that it is very sore because the baby is constantly sucking on it (not meaning to sound immature). The pressure the sucking has on the nipple hurts it because the nipple is a very sensitive area for anyone, but especially for a woman whose breast recently developed the ability to breast feed. And recently to me would be like within 1 year or so because compared to the rest of your life your breasts are not use to having a child feeding on them constantly. I'm afraid I don't think there's anything that can be done except wait until the baby can stop breast feeding and start eating baby food and drinking out of a bottle. Just take comfort in knowing that it won't last forever. It will only be a short while. When your baby grows up you'll find out you will actually miss even breast feeding him because he will have grown up. Hold dear the moments you have with him while he's so small. And if you need some relaxation either tell your husband to give you a massage (back as your breasts will be too sore for that) or have a girl friend or go to a spa. If you go to a spa perhaps you can hire a nanny to help take care of him and go to a spa for a day or so and then come back.

I had A LOT of pain for the first few weeks with my first baby. Second time around is much better! You will know baby is getting enough not so much by watching what goes in, but by watching what comes out.. if she is having at least 6 heavy wet diapers each day, you're alright. It's normal for breastfed babies to only poop once a week or so, though, so if this happens, don't worry.

Keep using the lansinoh if it's helping you. Also at the end of each feeding, express a little milk and rub it into your nipples, then allow your nipples to airdry if possible. Change breast pads whenever they are wet.

And keep at it... it really does get better soon!

It was murder for me. When my 10 week old son had blood in his diaper, I took him to the dr. who told me that it wasn't the child's blood, it was mine, I gave up breast feeding that day.

You've got to put the medicine on if you have any hope of continuing. How do you do with a breast pump? It might allow your nipples to heal a bit if you pumped for a day or two.

My dr. suggested this--find a window that's sunny yet no one's going to walk by, open up the window and take off your bra and just sit there and let the sun see your nipples. Apparently, the sun has healing powers--maybe vit D?

Lastly, I limited the amount of time baby could nurse. I think it was 7 min each side. Happy, sad, whatever, he got 7 min. Otherwise my nipples were overwhelmed--cracked, bleeding, scabbing, the whole 10 yards.

I'm glad I did it as long as I did, but my son was just a super-sucker.

Best wishes. Enjoy the close time with your baby. It's not going to traumatize your child if you choose to bottle-feed. Do what's best for you, because what's best for the baby is to have a happy mom.

Mine were sore for the first month or so. They were VERY VERY sore for the first couple of weeks, they cracked and bled, but only a little. It hurt to put that creme on it, to take a shower, even to have close rub up against my nipples. Plus my let down would hurt like heck at first too! It gets better, it takes a while to get used to, but now it's fine. Good luck :)

I have breastfed my 8 month old since birth and for the first month it would hurt like holy heck to have him latch on. The lactation consultant said that he was latching fine, but it would take a while for my nipples to toughen up. A birth he was 7 pounds exactly... and at 1 month he was 11 pounds 1 ounce... so he gained alright!!! ONLY by breastfeeding. And yes, that Lansinoh stuff would hurt to put on the first month... even water in the shower would hurt! The first 30 seconds of latching on were the WORST!!!

Now at 8 months old he is a whopping 22 pounds! And nursing hasn't hurt since 1 month old... (other than teething)...

Good luck! As long as he/she gains weight you are doing well!!!

EDIT: I also NEVER supplimented with a bottle. My son has never had a single drop of formula. Not even in the hospital. Don't listen to people telling you that you have to suppliment! To more baby sucks on you, the more milk you will make! Bare with it!

I am a 48 year old Mother of 2 grown children. I never used anything like your talking about. The old remedies are best. Wich is, washing before and after each feeding. 10 minuites on each side at a feeding. I never had the problem youare describing. : ) Besides if you do use any kind/s of lotion/s, always wash before feeding. You would be surprised as to how many girls donot know what I have just said. : ) Best wishes to you & your new baby.

I breast fed 2 babies. It never hurt. I would see a lactation consultant if I where you.Sounds like your babe may not be latching properly.
Congrats on your choice to breastfeed and I hope things get easier.Keep up the good work. I promise it is worth it.

takes a few weeks! Mine actually cracked and bled. I used the lasinoh after each feeding...and the health nurse told me to put on a square of saran wrap to keep the nipple moist. it gets sore because of it being moist and then drying out, moist then drying out etc. So if you keep it moist it is not as bad. It was excruiating for the first few weeks...almost to the point of tears for me,....but well worth it! keep going with it...it DOES get better!

The mother of my daughter only took her a few weeks to get used to it although she said you never get over the initial bite. After a few seconds she says it's not too bad.
