Lets see.
The vending machine costs a lot more than the little racks in a store. The vending machine is probably owned by someone other than the place where it is located, so the store owner gets a cut, plus the vending machine owner gets a cut. Also the vending machine runs on electricity so there is another expense that has to be paid for by the person buying the cancer sticks.
I quit a long time ago and am so glad I did.
You should too.

My guess would be that the person who owns the vending machine is depending on or all of these scenarios

1. A person is desparate for a cigarette and will pay extra to get one.

2. A person does not know that there is a difference, just believes that they are the same price.

3. The person getting the cigarettes cannot legally obtain them from a store.

Do some research. You will find lots of instances where stuff is more expensive when you think it should be cheaper. Pull out a calculator. At the store, a gallon of family sized laundry detergent is more expensive than 4 quarts of the same detergent. They both equal a gallon but one is more expensive. However, people will grab the family size because they think that the cost per ounce is cheaper. Lots of stores pull this, especially the warehouse stores like Sam's or Costco.

Because odds are the owner of the vending machine isn't buying the cigarettes in bulk like a convenience store would. Also, stores are usually chains, so their volume buying power gives them considerable discounts over the smaller guys.

Convenience. Just like a can of cola might cost $0.75 out of vending machine, but cost around $0.25 if bought from the grocery store.

Because the places that have vending machines know that you are stuck and there are no shops open so you will pay the price. like bars and clubs etc. Also smokers are deperate for cigarettes when thaey have been drinking so people pay it, and therefore they charge whatever they like cos they know you will buy
