Alas, it is all too serious! Mrs Gibbons has been found guilty of one of three charges levelled against her in Sudan, that of 'Insulting Religion'. Of course, we all know this actually means 'Insulting Islam'. But because Muslims think their prophet Mohammed is awesomely higher and greater than any other prophet of God, his name must not be linked to animals - even if they are NOT REAL ANIMALS! Even if a bit of cloth has The Name attached to it, they take offence! So, yes, Muslims go too far. There is no harm in calling a Teddy Bear by any name that other humans get called because humanity or life is not imparted to the lump of cloth by so doing. And it IS serious. This is what happens in countries where Sharia law begins to take hold.

It's not just Muslims that go too far, it's religious extremists in general, regardless of religion. For every Muslim cleric that does something this ridiculous, there is a Reverend Fred Phelps. He and his followers actually PICKET soldier's funerals! According to him and his followers, all soldiers are "fags". They go so far as to carry signs that say things like "God Bless IED'S!

I don't think anyone can explain how religious fervor reaches these levels.

It is silly, isn't it? Mohammed is an ordinary name, just like Fred, Emily, Chris etc. It just so happens that a prophet had that name, and they go ballistic over a teddy, but not all the little boys with that name.
The children chose the name, some of them are Christian, some Muslim. One of the children is called Mohammed and says the bear was named after him.

Hi Disorderly! My theory is that the Sudanese Government found out the origins of the Teddy bear named after the American President ( Theodore Roosevelt), and we know how much the yanks are thought of in the Middle East!

Wow. These guys are getting more extreme by the hour. I mean, if someone named a teddy bear, Jesus, for instance, I wouldn't really care, and 15 days for naming a TEDDY BEAR.. Mohammed? I mean they had a right to make the fuss about the belgian cartoon but... this? If they say their religion is so peaceful, why do they burn flags and convict people to jail? If that happened whenever a Jesus or a Jew joke was made..

It's very serious. The Muslim faith does not allow the worship of idols. By naming a Teddy Bear after the faith's most sacred prophet one is guilty of sacrilege--from the Muslim point of view.

Think about how angry Americans get if somebody burns a flag. Or if they say "We're embarrassed George Bush is from Texas."

I agree from a Western point-of-view the naming of a teddy bear seems silly. Unfortuately Mohamed was a very bad choice in a Muslim nation.

I am not saying I agree, but Muslims are very touchy about the name of thier prophet.

It gives you an idea of the sort of stuff we would have to put up with if our government was a Christian theocracy!

Interesting because to most children, a teddy bear is something they treat with affection, not hatred. I mean, it is not like they named it Muhammed is a dick.... it seems that certain factions always like to over react.. of course that is not terribly different from people in any country.. like people who do not want the pledge of allegiance in schools, or prayer and in some instances all reference to religion including holidays deleted. Zealots come in all forms.

And as a side note to Bjorn, we have that all the time.. just walk around Hollywood for a while, and you will see that guy.

Yes, I think so (they go too far).

Then again, do you think a teacher in a Catholic school should legally be able to be fired or suspended if they had named that teddy bear "Jesusscrewsyourmama"?

The point is that both religions would find these things incredibly offensive, and there are likely consequences. Apparently, the teacher who named the teddy bear "muhammed" violated an actual law. And as they say, ignorance of the law is no excuse.

I completly agree, im not at all a racist or against culture or religeon but there stupid and then theres this. If the same thing happened in a western european country it would be perfectly acceptable as being equal to all cultures but the muslims see it as being offensive! What!

it's as serious as a 767 flying into a building in NYC........

see how hard it will be to talk with the extreme version of Islam?

500 years ago if you named your donkey Jesus the Inquisition would do away with you......but that was 500 years ago. The West has moved on. Some parts of Islam haven't, and won't.
