You have to convert the video files to an ipod format.
Download this program:
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

It's free and easy to use. You can convert just about any video file with it.

MPEG4 files (aka mp4)

If you need to convert avi files to mp4, you can use http://www.zamzar.com . It's pretty easy. Just browse for the file, click Convert to mp4, and type in your email.

A few mins later they'll send you an email, just click on the link, press Download, Save, and save it somewhere.

Then open iTunes, click File at the top, then click Add File to Library. Then find the newly converted video. Easy!

Good luck =D
