We had two pregnancy like that several years back.
When the egg is first fertilized, it because to divide, and grow like a solid ball. When it reaches a certain size, it will then swell like a balloon, leaving a hollow in the middle. When the balloon reaches a certain number of cells, one section of it will collapse into the middle and actually because the "baby". The rest remains as the sac. This happens during the first few days of pregnancy, long before you have even missed a period or know you are pregnant.
If that collapse does not happen, then there is only a sac. Usually that sac will be carried for about 4 to 6 weeks. During that time the baby would normally begin to produce certain horomones. If those horomones never appear, then the body is signaled that the "baby" is not there, and it will reject the sac.
This is actually more common than most people realize. Often it will happen before a woman even knows for sure that she is pregnant, and she will assume it was just a "late period" and never know.
It is always heart breaking when it happens. I know how hard it was on my wife. My prayers will be with you today.

It could have been what is called a blighted ovum. It's like a chemical pregnancy that never actually continues on. I had one last year and it really has no bearing on whether or not you will be able to have a healthy baby in the future. My dr basically called it a fluke thing. Something may have been wrong chromosomally ( thats not a word I know)
Here is a link which can help you with the information you need. Sorry to hear about what happened, but I am 10 weeks pregnant now and doing well so I am sure when you are ready to ready to try again you will go on to have a healthy baby.

A fetus is not formed until after the 8th week in pregnancy. Up till then it is still an "embryo" and it does not have charecteristics of a fetus i.e. no legs, no arms. One of my friends was pregnant with "twins" and they said both of the sacs were empty, and she got a second opinon and now she has a healthy happy 16 month old boy. It may have been too early to tell.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. This could be a number of things, but my best guess was that the baby was rejected by the body because of a chromosomal deficiency. Either having too few or too many chromosomes would result in physical/mental abnormalities and the body would reject the embryo before it would start to grow.

It is usually some kind of defect with the Zygote that causes it not to develop. Usually after 3 consecutive miscarriages they do genetic testing on both parents to rule out a disorder that could be inherited.
