Right-click on a blank area of your desktop (meaning no icons or nothing under your pointer) and choose View>Auto Arrange. You should be able to move your icons wherever you want now. :-)

When Auto Arrange is on, it automatically arranges them on the left side of your screen.

Ditto all the above. You could click each icon, right-click, and Delete. You could right-click a blank area of the screen and un-check "Display icons". (In the second case, you might also want to right-click above the clock in the lower-right and, where it says, Toolbars, activate the Quick Launch and start dragging some icons over there...it's my personal favorite place for icons! Or just leave'em on your Start menu.)

Again a question without info about operating system *sigh*

Depending on the version of Windows you can remove My Computer, My Documents, etc... by right clicking on the desktop or on the start menu and following different paths.

Other icons are usually just program shortcuts and can be deleted without downloading other software. The programs still exist in your start menu, just not on the desktop.

Just right-click and then click delete. This will only delete the icon, not the program. You can always restore the icons later.

Are you talking about the icons on your desktop? You can get some programs (free and not-free) that allows you to tweak XP so it won't show the icons.
